The Manipura Chakra

Manipura Chakra is located at the solar plexus. Manipura is the third Chakra from the Muladhara. Manipura literally means “city of the jewel”. Its function is will, power. It is also called solar plexus Chakra. This Chakra corresponds to Svah or Svarga Loka. It has control over the liver, stomach, etc. This is a very important centre. From the Manipura Chakra ten nadis arise which appear like the petals of a lotus, the vibrations produced by these nadis are represented by sanskrit letters. Within there is a space triangular in form. It is the Agni Mandala (region of fire—Agni Tattva). The Bija(seed) of Agni is here, the seed mantra is at the centre. The presiding deity is Vishnu and Goddess is Lakshmi. This chakra has been compared to the power of the sun as it warms, moves and activates us. Because of the intensity of the pranic energy contained in this chakra, it also refers to “tapas”. It relates to our personal power and ego. The colour is yellow. Its planets are mars and the sun. Its stones are amber, topaz, citrine. Manipura is symbolized by a ten petalled bright yellow lotus. The tanmatra of manipura is sight. It is said that meditation on manipura chakra leads to knowledge of the entire physical system. When this centre is purified and awakened, the body becomes disease-free. The powers gained through the awakening of manipura chakra are self-defence, the acquisition of hidden treasures, knowledge of one’s own body, freedom from disease and the ability to withdraw the energy to sahasrara. Its guna is predominantly rajas, whereas the lower chakras are predominantly tamasic. The tatwa is agni, the fire element, its vayu is samana, which digests and distributes the essence of food to the entire system.
